In the summer of 2019 Tom took on the role of President of the ICAEW Croydon Society and has been enjoying getting to grips with the new role. He is looking forward to continuing some great work with the local business community and ICAEW members in order to support and develop the Croydon District Area.
One of Tom’s key aspirations for his Presidency is to create stronger connec- tions between ICAEW members and local schools to promote business and accountancy skills amongst the next generation.
“I am really excited about the opportuni- ty to be part of the evolution of our district society so that it continues to attract new volunteers, engage with the next generation of talent, as well as supporting current members and the wider community.
”I was first introduced to the ICAEW in 2017, when our former regulatary body, the ACCA, advised that it was planning to stop regulating the insolvency profes- sion. I found this quite disappointing as I’d been a member since qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant and they were our chosen regulator when Bailey Ahmad Business Recovery was founded in 2007.
“However, as a glass half full chap, I decided to take the opportunity to see what the ICAEW had to offer. I was extremely impressed with their approach and joined as an affiliate member. Not long after this Andrew Mackenzie-Smart ( Mac) approached me and encouraged me to get involved locally with the ICAEW, and advised me of the ICAEW pathways scheme. Not long after pass- ing the examination of experience via ICAEW Mac suggested I consider the presidency role, and, always up for a challenge, I decided to take it on!”
