Everyone has a different definition of failure. One thing we all have in common is that none of us wants to fail, or like to fail, although we all have at some point in the past and probably will again in the future. Failure is an inevitable part of life and something that cannot always be avoided, even when we work hard and have the best intentions.
We all want to be successful so it’s all too easy to become frustrated and discouraged when things don’t go the way we wanted them to. As a society, we’ve become fearful of failing having been taught that it’s a terrible thing that should be avoided. We’ve taken this so far that we tend to concentrate on people’s successes more than their failures. However, by doing this, we’re passing over the most important part of their journey; how they got to where they are and the failures they encountered before they got there.
Rarely has anyone experienced success without failing first. In fact, success more often than not comes to the people who fail the most. If you look back through history, the overwhelming majority of well-known and successful business owners and entrepreneurs have experienced failure in business at least once, if not multiple times. Therefore, if we want to succeed, we have to get over our fear of failure and accept it as a fundamental part of our journey.
Failure is not the end of the road, or a step backwards, but rather a steppingstone. It allows us to grow, learn important lessons, and make better decisions in the future. Most people associate failure with defeat; however, it can create new opportunities and give us new perspectives and understandings that we may not have reached otherwise; it’s not a defeat as long as you don’t let it defeat you. In the face of failure, stay strong, passionate and persevere, and celebrate that you gave it a go. It’s often said that it’s better to have failed trying than have never tried at all.
Like most things in life, failure is temporary. If you can learn to persevere with your passion, then you are one step closer to succeeding.
